season one was a pair of jeans. in summer 2025 american eagle put sydney sweeney in denim, leaned on a pun about genes, and spent a week as the argument everyone was having. the brand got the attention. sweeney got the fee.
season two is a sports prediction market called novig. same face, same heat, one structural difference: this time she owns a piece of it.
what actually happened
novig launched its "just sports" campaign around the start of the 2026 nfl season. sweeney appears wearing nothing but sports equipment, footballs and rackets and hoops standing in for clothes, in a 58-second film built to be clipped. novig's own instagram reel passed 37 million views in four days.
she did not take a cheque. she went to novig's co-founder and chief executive, jacob fortinsky, and negotiated an equity stake instead, and by the company's account she helped shape the creative. that is the detail that changes the maths. a hired face absorbs the backlash and moves on. an owner books the attention as an asset and the backlash as a cost on the same balance sheet.
novig is worth understanding on its own terms. it is a peer-to-peer exchange for sports outcomes, no house edge, regulated as a prediction market, 21 and over, and sports only. no elections, no weather, no fed decisions. its entire product is the thing athletes do.
the borrowed heat
the campaign borrows from four places at once: celebrity, sex, controversy and sport. the first three are the american eagle playbook run back almost line for line. the fourth is new, and it is the one that turned.
within days the reply came from the people who make the product. ariarne titmus, four olympic golds, called it a kick in the face to every woman who has dedicated her life to perfecting her craft. amy hunt answered straight after her 200 metres final in budapest: sydney sweeney, this is what women in sport look like. tilly kearns, lani pallister, gracie kramer and joc bartram posted their own training and competition footage with captions that said the same thing in their own voices. skye nicolson drew the line cleanly: there is a difference between looking sexy because you do sport and using sex to sell sport. the australian institute of sport cut a film of its female athletes across disciplines.
look at what that reply is as creative. real bodies doing the real thing, shot on phones and broadcast feeds, posted by people with earned audiences, in the exact format the campaign was built for. it is more native to the feed than the paid film, it costs nothing, and it carries the one thing the ad cannot buy, which is standing. the rebuttal out-produced the production.
sweeney's answer was a run of instagram stories showing athletes from espn's body issue. it is a fair point about nudity in sport. it is not a point about who gets to make the case. the athletes in those photographs were the subject. here they were the backdrop.
why the second-order context matters
attention is the wrong unit for this one. novig is a market whose value is a function of how much people care about athletes competing. the athletes are the supply side of the whole category. when the supply side publicly rejects how its context is being used, the campaign has not created heat around the product, it has created heat between the product and its own raw material.
that is the difference between the two seasons. american eagle sells jeans. nobody who makes denim was insulted. novig sells belief in sport, and the people who generate that belief just told its new owner that she got it wrong, on camera, in better creative.
same playbook, worse second-order context. the first run borrowed outrage from strangers. the second borrowed it from the customers the product depends on.
the call
bad move.
not because provocation is wrong, and not because the film failed to travel. it travelled further than most launches ever will. it is a bad move because the attention it bought is denominated in a currency the company cannot bank. every athlete who posted a rebuttal took a little of the market's legitimacy with her, and legitimacy is the only thing a betting exchange has to sell in year one.
rage is a loan, not revenue.
the loan came due inside a week. the interest is being paid by the people who were supposed to be the product's biggest fans.
